GMRS, or General Mobile Radio Service, is a land-mobile FM UHF radio service for short-distance two-way communication, primarily intended for personal, non-commercial use, requiring a license from the FCC.

Purpose: GMRS radios are designed for personal use in general communications, such as outdoor activities, family gatherings, or emergency situations.
Licensing: A GMRS license is required, but it covers an entire family for 10 years.
Frequency: GMRS radios operate in the 462 to 467 MHz frequency range of the UHF band.
Range and Power: GMRS radios offer higher power and range compared to Family Radio Service (FRS) radios, with portable models up to 5 watts and mobile/base station models up to 50 watts.
Compatibility: GMRS radios can communicate with FRS radios, as they share some channels, and GMRS radios can use repeaters to extend their range.
Station Types: GMRS allows the use of portable, mobile, fixed, and repeater stations.
Uses: GMRS is popular among off-roaders, overlanders, and other outdoor enthusiasts for reliable communication.
License Coverage: A GMRS license covers immediate family members, including spouse, children, grandchildren, stepchildren, parents, grandparents, stepparents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
FCC Regulations: GMRS stations cannot be interconnected with the public switched telephone network or any other network for the purpose of carrying GMRS communications, but these networks can be used for remote control of repeater stations.
GMRS vs. CB: GMRS offers FM radio with clearer sound quality and higher power than CB radios, which operate on AM and have lower power limits.
GMRS vs. Ham Radio: While both operate in the UHF bands, Ham radio operators have access to a broader range of frequencies, while GMRS users have a more limited selection of channels.
